The top ten teams in the world will begin their quest for the ultimate prize in T20 cricket when South Africa takes on Sri Lanka in the opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on 10 February at Newlands, according to the match schedule for Africa’s largest ever women’s sporting event.
Fans can now purchase tickets for the 23 matches that will take place in Cape Town, Paarl, and Gqeberha over the next 15 days. The world’s best cricketers will take center stage for a uniquely African cricket celebration culminating in a Finals weekend at Newlands Cricket Ground on Sunday, February 26 with the winner being crowned on Sunday, February 26. Tickets start at R60, with discounts available for students and pensioners. Families can take advantage of the action, as children under the age of six are admitted free to all venues.
Bangladesh and Ireland round out the field, joining Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies in the eighth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup, which promises to be a spectacular celebration for all.
The final match schedule was released on Monday at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town in a uniquely African event attended by ICC Ambassador Mithali Raj. The T20 World Cup, a game-changing opportunity for South African cricket, will aim to be the most inclusive and accessible cricket tournament ever played in the country, as part of back-to-back World Cups that will leave a legacy of increasing girls’ and women’s participation.
The Western Cape will host a busy first weekend of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The first double-header will be held at Boland Park, with England and the West Indies playing first, followed by defending champions Australia taking on New Zealand. The second double-header at Newlands will feature four sub-continent teams, with India facing Pakistan and Bangladesh facing Sri Lanka.
“We are thrilled to be announcing the match schedule for the next ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as we look to build on the success of Australia 2020 and host a uniquely African celebration of cricket,” said ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice.
“Women’s cricket continues to gain momentum and engage more fans than ever before as a key strategic priority for the sport.” We are confident that this event, as well as the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup preceding the senior event, will leave a lasting legacy to grow girls and women’s cricket around the world.”
Former India captain Mithali Raj, who is also an ICC Ambassador, expressed her excitement about the tournament’s location in South Africa.
“The schedule announcement brings us one step closer to the Women’s T20 World Cup.” This has been a fantastic period for the development of the women’s game, and I am confident that fans in South Africa will turn out in large numbers to cheer on the players.
“I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in ICC tournaments over the years and understand how important they are to players all over the world.” I can’t wait to see some fast-paced, high-energy cricket as well as close-fought, exciting matches.”
Pholetsi Moseki, Chief Executive of Cricket South Africa, says tickets have been priced so that all South Africans can support the Proteas during the special global event.
“South Africa is looking forward to the opening match against Sri Lanka, which will test our competitiveness on the field.” It will also be a historic occasion for South Africa to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, as well as a first-ever opportunity for our fans to experience the appealing blend of women’s cricket that will be broadcast around the world.
“This occurs at a time when the appetite for women’s cricket as a distinct brand is growing among fans.” We have reduced ticket prices to allow all fans to attend stadiums and share in the excitement, confirming that women’s cricket is open for business,” Moseki concluded.
